Inclusive Access to a Diploma: Reimagining Proficiency for Students with Disabilities Initiative

The Inclusive Access to a Diploma: Reimagining Proficiency for Students with Disabilities Initiative was supported by Senate Bill 154 (SB 154) and Senate Bill 101 (SB 101) which authorized the development of resources to support students with disabilities (SWD) statewide. The intent of the initiative resources and guidance was to support local educational agencies (LEAs) in expanding inclusive instructional practices that allow students with disabilities multiple ways to demonstrate their proficiency in coursework required to earn a standard California high school diploma. This initiative referred to these options as alternative means of expression defined as the different assessment mediums (tools, strategies, and assessment types) embedded in instruction that give students flexibility in how they demonstrate their learning without reducing academic rigor or altering graduation standards. Though the resources are designed for SWD, they may also be adapted to support other student bodies or expanded schoolwide/districtwide.
